“When we are genuinely seeking, the spirits will bring us messages. If you encounter the old woman of the forest, and you survive the encounter (which not all people do), it means that you will be given the gift of weaving.”

Biography

Todd DeVries is a Haida Cedar Bark weaver and storyteller based in Vancouver, BC focused on the practical use of his creations and the community building potential of this fine craft while also sharing stories about the values and imperatives that go with it. Todd first started weaving with Western Red Cedar Bark in 2001 following a mysterious vision he had of the Old Woman of the Forest in 1999. Since moving to Vancouver, BC, in 2010, he has been teaching other weavers how to weave with cedar bark as medicine, through demonstrations, workshops, weaving circles and formal mentorships. He has taught communities as diverse as elders and youth through community programs throughout BC and Northern Canada. His work has been exhibited at various community galleries and at cultural events, and is available on consignment through his website. Todd's mandate: Give everyone a cedar bark hat by teaching them the skill to weave one of their own.
