Biography

Yeye Luisah Teish is a writer, activist, and spiritual counselor. She is an initiated elder (Iyanifa) in the Ifa/Orisha tradition and a member of and The Mother Earth Delegation of United Indigenous Nations. She has authored six books on African and African-diaspora spiritual culture, most notably “Jambalaya: The Natural Woman’s Book of Personal Charms and Practical Rituals, a women’s spirituality classic (1985 Harper & Row Publishers), which has been translated into German, Spanish, and Dutch, and has contributed to 40 anthologies and magazines such as Ms. Essence, Sage Woman, and the Yoga Journal. Yeye Teish has written, directed, and performed ritual theater in Europe, Venezuela, New Zealand, and the United States. Her performances include St John the Divine Cathedral in New York, The Ogden Museum in New Orleans, The Museu Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, Portugal, The Galaxy Theater in Auckland, New Zealand, and La Casa de la Poesia in Caracas, Venezuela. Her prayers and poetry have been published in seven indigenous languages.
